UFC 217 was expected to be the biggest UFC card of the year,
and possibly one of the biggest cards of all time.
It did not disappoint, with all three title fights ending in
spectacular fashion. The card took place in New York’s Madison Square Garden,
and marked the second UFC event at the historic venue.
Fast-rising middleweight Paulo Costa continued his unbeaten
streak as he scored a TKO victory over former welterweight champion Johny
Hendricks. Former welterweight title challenger Stephen Thompson picked up a
unanimous decision victory over George Masvidal.
Rose Namajunas came into her strawweight title bout as a
massive underdog against the undefeated champion Joanna Jedrzejczyk. She
shocked the MMA world by scoring a first-round finish, knocking Jedrzejczyk
down multiple times and making the feared female tap to strikes.
Bitter rivals finally met in the cage as bantamweight
champion Cody Garbrandt faced off against former champion T.J. Dillashaw. Garbrandt
dropped Dillashaw near the end of the first round, and the challenger still
seemed hurt as he went to his corner. Dillashaw rallied in the second, dropping
Garbrandt and finishing him with a barrage of strikes. After recapturing the gold, Dillashaw challenged
pound-for-pound great and flyweight champion Demetrious Johnson to a
champion-versus-champion match.
After a four-year absence, Georges St.-Pierre returned to
challenge middleweight champion Michael Bisping. GSP looked as good as ever,
landing crisp punches and multiple takedowns. Bisping was able to scramble back
to his feet and landed a number of strikes as well. He even cut GSP from the
bottom, and it seemed the blood was beginning to impact the challenger’s
vision.
In the third round, GSP landed a beautiful counter left-hand
that dropped the champion. He pounced, raining down strikes and taking Bisping’s
back in the ensuing scramble. GSP locked in a rear-naked choke and Bisping, who
refused to tap, went to sleep. Georges St. Pierre is the new UFC middleweight
champion.
With his win, GSP joins the likes of Conor McGregor, BJ
Penn, and Randy Couture on the list of fighters who have won UFC titles in more
than one weight class.
